As a proud old boy of Trinity College, with much of my family having a lineage to, I have always cherished the rich traditions and fierce rivalries that come with being a Trinitian. However, my experience has taken an unexpected turn as I now watch my son don the colours of Royal College and play against my alma mater.

The Bradby Shield is not just another rugby match; it is a celebration of history, tradition, and above all, true sportsmanship. This annual encounter has become a symbol of the deep-rooted rivalry and equally innate camaraderie between Trinity and Royal. It embodies more than just the competitive spirit; it represents an enduring legacy and bond between two of Sri Lanka’s most prestigious schools. The Royal Collage vs Trinity Collage rugby rivalry began in 1920, with the first match played on July 31. Bradby Shield was presented by the then departing Principal of Royal Collage, E.L. Bradby in 1945 to be awarded to the winner of the highest aggregate score of a two-legged encounter.

No Bradby without Royal and Trinity

The Bradby Shield encounter is unique because it involves two schools that have been rivals for decades. Trinity College and Royal College are not just institutions; they are symbols of excellence in academics and sports. The rivalry between these schools adds a special flavour to the Bradby, making it an event eagerly awaited by students, alumni, and rugby enthusiasts alike. The match would not have the same significance without the participation of both schools, each bringing their own history, pride, and tradition to the field, determined to clinch the coveted Bradby Shield and the glory it brings.

As someone with a unique vantage point, I can appreciate the richness of both perspectives, rather than being confined to one. This broader perspective deepens my appreciation for the effort taken by both schools and their teams in keeping the Bradby spirit of rivalry and camaraderie alive through generations.

Beyond wins and defeats

While the Bradby Shield encounter is fiercely contested, it’s essential to remember that it’s more than just a game of rugby. The event encapsulates the values of sportsmanship, dedication, commitment, mutual respect, and unity. As much as each side wants to win, the true spirit of the Bradby lies in the camaraderie and respect shared by the players, coaches, and supporters of both teams. It’s a celebration of youth, talent, and the timeless traditions of both institutions.

As a father watching my son represent Royal College, I am reminded that the Bradby is not just about the outcome but about the journey, the effort, and the joy of the game. The passion and pride I see in my son’s eyes are the same emotions I experienced as a Trinitian. The bond we share transcends the colours we wear on and off the field.

The rich history of Bradby Shield

The Bradby Shield has a storied history that dates back nearly eight decades. The first encounter was held in 1945, and since then, it has become one of the most anticipated events in the Sri Lankan sporting calendar. The match has witnessed many memorable moments, legendary players, and iconic victories. It has been a stage where young talent has been nurtured and where the true spirit of rugby has thrived; emerging as the ultimate victor, every time.

Over the years, the Bradby Shield has evolved, while retaining its core values. It has become a platform for showcasing the best of schoolboy rugby in Sri Lanka, drawing large crowds and media attention. The anticipation and excitement surrounding the Bradby extend beyond the 70 minutes of play, making it a cultural phenomenon that brings together generations of alumni and supporters.

Celebrating the Bradby spirit

As we gear up for another Bradby Shield encounter, it’s crucial to celebrate the event in its entirety. Whether you are a Trinitian or a Royalist, a player or a spectator; the Bradby offers a chance to be part of something bigger than a rugby match. It’s an opportunity to celebrate history, tradition, and the unbreakable bond between two of the great schools in the country.

This year, as I watch my son represent Royal College, I am reminded of the true essence of the Bradby. The Bradby Shield is a testament to the enduring spirit of competition, true friendship, and mutual respect. As a Trinitian father and a proud supporter of my son, I can only hope that this spirit continues to thrive for generations to come.

Let us cherish the Bradby Shield encounter not just as a game but as a celebration of our passion for rugby, and the timeless traditions of this united and shared history of Trinity College and Royal College.
