Inter University Students’ Federation splits
View(s):The Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) has split into two factions, with each side claiming to represent the real organisation.
The dispute arose when a group of students representing the student unions of several state universities as well as other state-run higher education institutes convened at the University of Peradeniya on July 20.
Subsequently, a press release was issued claiming that new office-bearers had been elected to the IUSF, with Sasindu Perera of the Peradeniya University being elected as the IUSF’s new convener. Addressing a media briefing, the new IUSF “Convener” Sasindu Perera claimed that they were “reorganising” the IUSF and that the student organisation intended to continue its fight for free education, focusing first on the new education reforms the government intends to enact from next year.
However, a press release signed by Madushan Chandrajith, who had been the IUSF’s Convener until the announcement of Sasindu Perera’s appointment, claimed the IUSF’s leadership had not changed and accused the government of “shamelessly attempting to create chaos within the student movement, by using their party representatives as university student leaders.” The statement claimed this was being done as part of the government’s efforts to privatise education.
At present, both sides are laying claim to the IUSF name and its logo. (SJ)
