Jamie Weston, Head of the Department of Computing and Information Technology at Holmesglen Institute, Australia, concluded a successful four-day visit to Sri Lanka from July 14th to 17th, marking a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between Holmesglen and Australasian Academy Sri Lanka.

The visit focused on reinforcing educational collaboration, enhancing institutional training, and aligning academic programmes with industry standards. Australasian Academy, a leading provider of Australian pathway programmes in Sri Lanka, hosted Jamie as part of a broader initiative to strengthen international educational ties and support the delivery of globally recognised qualifications.

During his stay, Jamie conducted a series of capacity-building workshops for the staff across academic, administrative, marketing, and operations. These sessions emphasized modern teaching techniques, student engagement practices, and the use of digital tools to improve learning outcomes and institutional effectiveness.

“Training every stakeholder from lecturers to support staff is essential to building a world-class learning environment,” Jamie emphasised during his sessions.

A key focus of the visit was bridging the gap between academia and industry. Jamie participated in high-level consultation meetings with IFS and Virtusa, two of Sri Lanka’s leading IT companies. These discussions aimed at identifying skill gaps in graduates and proposing curriculum enhancements to meet the demands of the modern workforce.

Jamie stressed the importance of internships, mentorships, and real-world projects to better prepare students for employment in today’s fast-evolving tech landscape. Both IFS and Virtusa expressed strong interest in supporting curriculum development and student training initiatives.

Additionally, Jamie conducted career guidance sessions for students at leading schools in Colombo, inspiring students to consider careers in Information Technology. He encouraged them to view technology not just as a career path, but as a platform to solve global problems and drive innovation.

“IT careers today go beyond coding. They demand creativity, adaptability, and global awareness,”, Jamie highlighted

The visit was hailed by Australasian Academy’s leadership as “timely and impactful,” underscoring the institution’s commitment to delivering industry-relevant, globally aligned education.

“This collaboration enhances opportunities for Sri Lankan youth and sets a new benchmark in vocational education quality,” a spokesperson for the Academy said.

The Holmesglen-Australasian Academy partnership has been instrumental in providing Sri Lankan students with access to Australian qualifications, helping them build careers that meet international standards. Jamie Jamie’s visit further reaffirmed Holmesglen’s long-term commitment to this mission.

As demand for skilled IT professionals continues to rise, both institutions have pledged to expand collaborative efforts, ensuring students are prepared not just for jobs, but for meaningful, future-ready careers.
