Paddyfield baby pulls at heartstrings

Mawathagama police have been inundated by more than 1000 telephone calls from locals and from overseas offering to adopt a newborn baby girl found dumped in a paddy field, a senior police officer said.
The infant, crying and shivering, was found by a passerby in a paddy field in the Sinhapura area in Mawathagama, Kurunegala, on Thursday. The police who were informed handed the infant over to the Kurunegala hospital. The officer said the baby, who was still in hospital, was doing well.
He added that the police station had been receiving calls from Canada, Dubai, America, New Zealand and Australia.
“Most of the calls are from couples who do not have children. They ask about the infant’s condition and if there is a possibility to adopt her,” he said.
He said during these past three days they have received calls on the general line of the police station, the telephone line of the officer in charge, and on a mobile number. He said the callers were briefed on the legal procedures regarding adoption.
The officer said they were investigating how the child ended up being abandoned in a paddy field, and a search was on for the mother of the infant.
He said they have studied CCTV footage from the vicinity and even sought the help of midwives to gain any information on the possible mother.
The officer said until the police arrived on the scene, no one had even attempted to wrap up the baby, who was shivering from the cold. He said the public should not fear to intervene in such situations and that there were no legal impediments on anyone who would do so.
