Met Dept.warns of strong winds and rough seas

The Meterological Department has issued an advisory on strong winds, both in inland areas and coastal areas, for today (Sunday).

Strong winds of about (50-60) kmph can be expected at times over Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-Western and North-Central provinces, due to the active south-west monsoonal condition, the Department said.

Fairly strong winds about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times elsewhere.

The sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota will be rough with strong gusty winds of up to (60-70) kmph.

A wave height of about 2.5 – 3.0 m may increase in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. These areas may experience surges due to sea waves, the Department said, with warnings to Naval and fishing communities not to venture into the sea in these areas.

Navy personnel and fishermen engaged in activities in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai have been requested to be vigilant.
