A 21-year-old youth from Mawanella, who had been detained for nine months under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) following his arrest for allegedly posting an anti-Israeli message on social media, was released on bail this week by Mount Lavinia Magistrate Hemali Halpandeniya.
The magistrate ordered the release of the suspect, Mohammed Suhail, on two personal bail bonds of Rs. 500,000 each.
Producing the suspect in court, Dehiwala Police Officer-in-Charge Anuradha Herath said the Attorney General had recommended the granting of bail. He also submitted to the court the letter signed by Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne in this regard.
The youth was arrested in October 2024 in front of the Israel Consul’s office in Dehiwala. He was subsequently released on bail after being produced in court but was then arrested again in Mawanella and detained under the PTA for nine months. After nine months, however, the police this week asked the court to release him on bail, stating that no criminal offence had been established against him. Accordingly, bail was granted to the suspect, with the magistrate ordering him to appear in court again on September 16.
Attorney-at-Law Geethma Fernando, with Attorneys-at-Law Ilham Hassanali, Ashraf Mukthar, Waruna Jayasinghe, and Aruni Ranasinghe appeared for the suspect.
