A fisherman from Beruwala, Sinhara Madhushan Silva (35), was reported missing yesterday morning after he fell into the sea from a trawler during strong winds. He was one of six people aboard the vessel.

The skipper from the craft had earlier informed those on shore that they were returning to the Beruwala harbour as they were unable to travel at usual speeds due to the adverse weather conditions.

However, with less than two kilo metres to the shore they had experienced strong winds and rough seas and one fisherman fell into the water when their trawler was tossed up. The others managed to remain onboard.

A search operation is ongoing with the assistance of the Air Force.
