NPC finds SDIG Jayawardena guilty of all charges linked to Easter Sunday attack; services terminated
View(s):The National Police Commission has terminated the services of the former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director and Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Nilantha Jayawardena from the Police Department.
The Sunday Times learns that SDIG Jayawardena was found guilty of seven charges against him, all linked to the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.
A formal inquiry by the NPC found him guilty of all charges against him and his services were terminated on Friday, an official linked to the inquiry said. The NPC chaired by retired High Court Judge Lalith Ekanayake took the decision based on the findings of the inquiry.
Mr.Jayawardena is accused of failing to take appropriate action despite being privy to intelligence reports prior to the 2019 attacks.
He had been on compulsory leave from service since July 2024 pending the NPC inquiry against him.
In November 2023, he was ordered to pay Rs. 75 million by the Supreme Court as compensation in fundamental rights (FR) petitions filed by family members of over the Easter Sunday bombing victims over his failure to take action to prevent the attacks despite receiving sufficient intelligence information.
