Sri Lankan students excels at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad
View(s):Sri Lankan students showcased their exceptional skills by winning three bronze medals and an Honourable Mention award at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), which recently took place at the Expo Centre in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The four students who made the nation proud are: Himaru Abeygunaratne from Trinity College, Kandy; Methmaka Jayasena from Royal College, Colombo; Rithmini Weerakkody from Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, Colombo; and Menan Srikaran from St. John’s College, Jaffna.
The Sri Lankan team was accompanied by the mentors, Dr. Chinthaka Ratnaweera (University of Ruhuna) and Dr. Upul Kumarasinge (University of Sri Jayewardenepura). They also represented the Chemistry Olympiad Sri Lanka Committee of Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.
The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), since its start in 1968, has provided a platform for secondary school students from around the globe to enhance their creativity and cognitive abilities in tackling chemistry-related challenges. This year, 360 high school students from 90 different countries took part in this esteemed competition. The event featured a series of rigorous theoretical exams and laboratory experiments aimed at evaluating the participants’ chemistry knowledge and practical skills.
The Chemistry Olympiad Sri Lanka (COSL) committee, a prominent sub-committee of the Council of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC), confidently organises the annual Sri Lanka National Chemistry Olympiad (SLNChO). This esteemed event selects the exceptional team that will represent Sri Lanka at the prestigious International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). In January this year, approximately 35 outstanding students were chosen through the competitive all-island preliminary selection examination. Following this, a series of intensive practical and theoretical workshops were conducted, ensuring participants were well-prepared for the final round of the SLNChO, which took place in April 2024. Ultimately, four exemplary representatives for the Sri Lankan team were selected based on their impressive performances in challenging practical and theoretical examinations. They underwent further training by IChemC for over two months to enhance their knowledge and skills in advanced fields of chemistry crucial for a strong performance in IChO before their participation in the said competition in July. Throughout those months, especially during the competition, all four students gained substantial experience in Chemistry and had the chance to delve into their passion for the subject.
This marks Sri Lanka’s sixth IChO and the third time the Sri Lankan team has participated in person. The four students who represented Sri Lanka at the IChO this year gained invaluable exposure through their participation. They had the opportunity to engage with peers from around the world, exchange ideas, and build international friendships. This experience not only broadened their academic horizons but also enhanced their cultural understanding and confidence in participating in global scientific competitions.
