The University of Peradeniya hosted the AI Skills Week from July 14 to 18 with several national and institutional partners. This five-day initiative aims at building AI awareness and capacity across all segments of the academic community.

“This week was a launching pad for all AI education and training and is intended for the entire academic community ranging from the alumni, UG ad PG student population as well as the academic and non-academic staff together with researchers,” Prof Roshan Regal said.

The session on Monday kicked off with a year-long training programme for alumni, and the following day there was a training programme for all state undergraduate and vocational centre students.

The programme on Wednesday was for PG students and researchers while the programme on Thursday was for academic staff. The professor highlighted that there was a panel discussion on how AI is changing the education landscape.

The programme on Friday focused on administrative and operational staff members by focusing on how AI can be employed by them to better enhance their work.

Prof Regal explained that the focus of the week-long programme was on how AI can be used by the different educational communities to improve education.

The programme also catered to non-scientific sectors and social science students joined the week-long activity.

All state universities took part in the programme, as well as non-state universities such as SLIT, NSBM and SLTC.

The grants for this activity and year-long activities come from foreign sources mainly as philanthropic grants for improving AI.

Various local institutes and personnel helped organise the event. This included the Lanka Education and Research Network with the assistance from Prof Wasntha Kuamra (Chairman), Prof Roshan Regal (CEO) and Dr Asitha Bandaranayake (CTO), Alumni Association of University of Peradeniya with the assistance from Deepthi Bandara (President) and University of Peradeniya Multidisciplinary Research Center with assistance from Prof Janaka Ekanayake (Director).
