CTU calls for meeting with all education personnel to discuss reforms
View(s):The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) called for a meeting with other teacher unions, as well as other personnel involved in the education sector, to discuss the proposed education reforms, and future actions.
The Union’s General Secretary Joseph Stalin explained that they have scheduled the meeting for Monday July 28.
They would discuss their future actions on education reforms at this meeting. Mr Stalin added that they are not opposing the reforms, but are calling for reforms which would address issues in the sector.
They also intend to discuss the reforms required to improve school education.
Mr Stalin pointed out that education reforms by the government have not addressed the issues in education.
“These reforms are brought without consulting the teachers as well as teacher unions; teachers are the ones who are knowledgeable of the ground level situation as they directly deal with students. Taking decisions and making reforms without them is wrong and impractical,” he said.
He said that reforms were set up during President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s time. At the time, a pilot project was conducted in 110 schools and around 300 million rupees was spent on it.
However, when the current government decided to implement those reforms as the new reforms, they had not discussed with teachers, and had not even trained teachers to work according to reforms.
Mr Stalin added that education reforms must cover areas which need attention as well as provide solutions to issues, such as reduction of competition for GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level exams, competition for privileged schools.
He said the current government believes their decisions are correct and take decisions by consulting provincial education officers, provincial politicians without consulting teachers, educators and principals. (KW)
