Motorists continue to face difficulties due to delays in the issuance of vehicle licence plates, with the procurement process still underway.

Commissioner General of the Department of the Motor Traffic Kamal Amarasinghe, told the Sunday Times: “Around 15 suppliers have submitted their bids. The Cabinet-appointed negotiation committee held discussions with the companies last week, and samples from the shortlisted suppliers have now been sent for technical evaluation.”

He could not give a time frame for issuing licence plates. An earlier promise was two months.

Police have been told not to penalise drivers impacted by the delay.

“The delay in issuing number plates has caused considerable inconvenience to people,” said Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety, Indika Hapugoda.

“We have instructed police officers not to fine motorists. However, drivers must carry their driving licence, vehicle registration certificate, and insurance certificate at all times.’’

New vehicle owners will be allowed to drive without licence plates, provided they carry essential documents.
