UDA in car park manoeuvre to prevent single operator from taking all slots
View(s):The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has at once advertised two-year management contracts for five of its car parks in an effort to prevent all the plots from going to a single operator “as it happened in the past.”
When the contracts for these car parks expired, most were renewed for short periods until a decision was made to open bids for them at the same time, said UDA Director-General Mahinda Withaanachchi.
“When we call for bids for them separately, one person gets them,” he explained. “When they are advertised separately, one person cannot bid for them all.”
Accordingly, 1.77 acres in Baladaksha Mawatha in Colombo 2 is open for a fresh management contract at a higher bid price than Rs. 600,000 monthly (the base price payable to the UDA), while a car park of eight acres and 40 perches is available at Chalmer’s Granary in Pettah for a higher bid price than the minimum of Rs. 7.2 million a month expected by the UDA.
Another car park of 25 perches in the vicinity of the Colombo Gold Centre (formerly St. John’s Fish Market) is on offer for a higher bid than the base price of Rs. 311,300 monthly, while one acre and 25 perches in Maradana Abeysinharamaya is available for a higher bid than the base price of Rs. 250,000 monthly.
Finally, a 67-perch car park in Thalawathugoda has been advertised for a base price of Rs. 200,000 a month. All the bids close on
July 16, 2025.
