Disrupt Asia to pivot SL as a hub for innovation, entrepreneurship
The Disrupt Asia 2025 event, scheduled for September 17-20, aiming to transform Colombo into a vibrant centre for innovation, will kick off with Venture Engine, Sri Lanka’s leading start-up funding platform, which opened registrations on June 18, providing start-ups with mentorship and exposure to investors.
This year’s Disrupt Asia hopes to attract a diverse group of start-ups, investors, industry leaders, corporates, policymakers, and ecosystem builders. At the launch, Eranga Weeraratne, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, emphasised the importance of Disrupt Asia 2025 in accelerating Sri Lanka’s start-up ecosystem and fostering global collaboration. He emphasised the importance of such platforms in nurturing a technology-driven future and augmenting the start-up ecosystem in Sri Lanka.
This initiative is aimed at advancing Sri Lanka’s digital transformation and establishing it as a leading destination for tech innovation in the region, Heminda Jayaweera, Executive Director, TRACE, said. The programme will address a range of topics essential for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, including the transition from solopreneurship to start-up, utilising policy as a tool for innovation, and strategies for bringing university research to market. It will also focus on positioning Sri Lanka for global innovation, with specific discussions on sectors such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, educational technology, and Greentech, he added.
Supported by the Ministry of Digital Economy and the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), Disrupt Asia 2025 has assembled partnerships with various organisations, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mastercard, and several angel networks.
The Main Conference and Start-up Showcase on September 18 will feature keynote sessions from industry leaders and provide opportunities for start-ups to connect with investors. The Innovation Festival on September 19 will hail technology and creativity, featuring interactive tech demonstrations and product showcases across various sectors, including FinTech, HealthTech, and AI.
Also, a curated sundowner event will feature world-class Sri Lankan brands, adding to the international engagement aspect of Disrupt Asia. “This comprehensive approach aims to inspire the next generation of innovators and solidify Sri Lanka’s role in the regional tech landscape.
“The Innovation Festival aims to promote vital connections within the innovation ecosystem, collaboration and knowledge sharing amongst participants,” Mr. Jayaweera noted further.
