Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, speaking as the Education Minister, said that the prevailing higher education system should be reformed rapidly.

The government believes that the current education system should change to a new system for the ‘betterment of all students’, she said.

She made these comments in parliament responding to queries by NPP MP Danushka Ranganath.

The prime minister said the ministry is intervening to carry out the necessary actions. According to her, the government was also paying attention to reforming current subjects taught at universities and other higher education institutes.

“Apart from that the government had given special attention to school education, and are engaged in acts required to reform the syllabus,” she added.

An expert committee had been appointed to make recommendations in order to reform higher education, she said, and as soon as their recommendations are received the actions required to carry out the reforms would be done.
