Ananda down Bens to bag Premier Trophy
Ananda College bagged the Dialog Premier Trophy when they pulled off a comfortable 25-10 win over St. Benedict’s College in the final played at Havelock Park yesterday. Ananda in fact went one step further from last year as they were runners-up having played second fiddle to Mahanama.
The first half was a closely contested affair which saw Ananda holding on to a close three point lead (8-5) at the breather. But they succeeded to open up in the second half adding a further 17 points and in whole accumulated their points through four tries, a conversion and a penalty to the two tries scored by St. Benedict’s.
The Anandians came into the game as the favoured side but they found the Benedictines a tough opponent who curtailed them to a try and a penalty. But it was the Bens who scored first in the second half and it took Anandians a good 25 minutes to breach the Bens defence to post two tries, with one being converted, followed with a penalty in the latter stages of the game.
It will be some confidence for Ananda who will be playing in the top division in the league tournament this year starting from early June. But they will be meeting stiffer opposition and the approach of the game will be much tougher than the opposition they have been playing.
