Petes defeat Joes to retain Rev. Fr. Peter A. Pillai Shield

Enosh Peterson scored an unbeaten 37 and picked up two scalps to earn the Player of the Match award
Dilana Damsara’s brilliant half century laid the foundation for St. Peter’s College to record a comfortable 4-wicket win over traditional rivals St. Joseph’s College in the 51st Battle of the Saints Limited Over encounter played at the SSC ground yesterday. The win saw St. Peter’s retaining the Rev. Fr. Peter A. Pillai Memorial Shield for yet another year and in the process also chalked up their 23rd win of the series to the 25 by St. Joseph’s.
St. Peter’s, after restricting St. Joseph’s for a score of 177 runs, was given a sound start in their run chase of 178 runs by Dilana and skipper Oween Salgado. The duo together put on 69 runs, which was followed by a brief stand of 41 runs for the second wicket between Dilana and Nathan David. Despite Dilana fell as the third wicket, St. Peter’s were steered by Enosh Peterson, who remained unbeaten on 37 that helped them to race to the target in the 46th over.
Earlier, batting first St. Joseph’s lost an early wicket in the third over when the total was at nine. Besides a 54-run stand for the second wicket between top scorer Aveesha Samash, who made 75, and Abishek Jayaweera, the Joes fell into deep trouble after losing wickets at regular intervals. They were struggling on 93-5 at the halfway stage of the innings. However they managed to make a recovery after a brief partnership of 41 runs for the eighth wicket between Aveesha and Nushan Perera, a stand that helped them to reach a respectable total of 177 runs.
