The Higher Education Ministry and University Grants Commission are seeking Treasury assistance to obtain funding required for the completion of stalled projects including hostels and certain faculties.

They hope to obtain about Rs12 billion for various projects which have been long delayed due to lack of funds. The funding is to be obtained ahead of the Budget due to be presented early next year as the projects need to be completed as soon as possible to provide facilities for the students.

The funds are expected to be received early next year. UGC Chairman Kapila Seneviratne said in the next two weeks they expect to have consultations with Vice Chancellors to identify the projects which need to be prioritised.

The UGC is also looking forward to the revival of several funding programmes which have been stalled pending the debt restructuring programmes underway.
The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education under Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya has been looking at expediting the projects to improve facilities to students. (DWI)
