New Vistas In Gender Equality And Prosperity In Sri Lanka “Women Are Truly God’s Most Precious Gift To Mankind”
View(s):Women are unique when it comes to physical, biological, giving birth and lactation. They also outsmart men regarding love, affection, caring, sacrificing, tolerance, compassion, coping skills, forgiveness, kindness, understanding and so on.
However, due respect and share are not given to them whether it is in the family, work, economy, education, society, politics or country even though enormous contributions have been made towards the success of the above-mentioned categories.
In a family life, apart from her physical and biological attributes including giving birth to a child and lactation, all other duties and responsibilities should be shared and shouldered bythe husband as well. As of now, most women do “double day of work”.This means eight hours of work at the office and eight hoursof work at home doing house chores and looking after the children and husband.
When it comes to work women are exploited and underpaid in particular in the estate sector, garment sector and domestic aids or servants.
In the corporate sector, there are many women on the front line and few in the middle management categories. However, there are only a handful of women in the top management category.
THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDG-17 GOALS)
The SDG 5 indicators continue in the following manner;
“Providing women and girls with equal access to education,healthcare, decent work and representation in policy and economic decision-making processes will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large”.
School girls, female students in colleges and universities and women should know their rights including the above-mentioned SDG 5 goals.
RECOMMENDATIONS
MADE BY THE WRITER
We should endeavour to reach SDG 5 established by the UN by appropriate local strategies developed by eminent Scholars in the Universities and enhance the information and communication strategies to promote the concept of, “empowerment of women”.Sound policies and enforceable legislation should be made to support and fulfil SDG 5 goals.
All women and girls should be educated on gender equality and equity, including equal rights and inclusion, equal pay and free fromgender-base dacts of violence and suppression, gender discrimination and gender stereotyping, harassment, physical abuse emotional abuse and exploitation.They should be taught, “where to go” and “whom to meet” and “how to meet” and “when to meet” and “What to tell” and “How to tell”, in the event of hindering circumstances and create awareness of SDG 5 goals and how they could contribute to the success of it.
The government should kindly consider to look into the welfare and development of women working in the estate and garment sectors, Tea Estates and on the domestic front and ensure that they are not exploited and appropriate wages are paid to them. Furthermore, the government should consider ensuring that the working conditions and environment are conducive to their work. The government should encourage a trilingual policy so that all societies could benefit from the programmes. More and more women should be given the top positions in the private and government sector companies and for this to happen women should endeavor to upgrade their knowledge and skills by following their higher studies and proving that they are capable of doing the job of a company head.
In conclusion, in my humble opinion, women are stronger than we think and they are multi-talented and bestowed with divine qualities.Let us give them equal opportunities to succeed in life.Let us protect them and respect them.
Let us support gender equality and inclusion in Sri Lanka and eliminate gender exclusion, gender acts of violence, suppression, gender discrimination and gender stereotyping from our Motherland and the universe.
It’s our duty and it’s in our hands.Then perhaps, we may be able to see “new vistas” in our lives and witness and enjoy prosperity, in Sri Lanka and the world.
“Women are literally God’s gift to man”.
