A new Master of Communication Management programme is to be introduced by the University of Kelaniya in early March 2025, which would last two years, and upon completion of which students can do a doctorate course, Senior Lecturer Dr Manoj Jinadasa said.

The course has been approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The University of Kelaniya and the University of New Castle UK will sign an agreement where the latter would help in lecturing, training of academic and local staff and the provision of foreign lecturers.

Dr Jinadasa said the programme would be a student-centered course where all lecturers would have a doctorate and would have received their qualification in locations such as UK, US, New Zealand, Canada, China and Japan.

“All the lecturers come from University of Moratuwa, Open University of Sri Lanka and University of Kelaniya. It is mandatory that they should have a PhD. The course would be student-oriented and practically-oriented with lots of individual application together with case studies and social corporate projects to create specialised skills and competencies.”

He added that more marks will be given to assignments of practical activities and not limited to paper-based exams.

Lectures would not only come from media but would also come from marketing, advertising, economics,
HR, statistics, IT, data sciences, psychology, sociology and business development backgrounds.

The programme is a weekend course with some outdoor sessions as well and will
be mostly on site with
facilities to be provided by the University of Kelaniya such as classroom as well as IT and electronics. The university does not provide funding or a budget for the course and the entire programme would be funded by course fees.
