Hirun, Abishek establish new record in drawn Saints battle

St. Joseph’s College batting pair Hirun Kapurubandara and Abishek Jayaweera was unfortunate to miss out on tons but the pair succeeded to establish a new series record for second wicket in batting when they put on 153 runs on day two of the 90th Battle of the Saints big match against traditional rivals St. Peter’s College concluded in a tame draw at the SSC ground yesterday.
Kapurubandara cracked 94 runs in 108 balls which included nine boundaries and four sixes while Jayaweera made an unbeaten 80 which came off 151 balls with four boundaries and a six.
The pair had shared an unbroken 84 runs in Josephians score of 91 for 1 on day one and resuming on day two, they went on to add further 69 runs before being separated, but not before establishing a new second wicket partnership of 153 runs. This eclipsed the record that stood for 17 years that of 128 runs put on by another Josephian pair Ajith Allirajah and Nishantha Samarasinghe set in 1987.
The separation of the pair after having resumed from 91 for 1, saw the Josephians losing three quick wickets before deciding to make a declaration with the score on 228 for 5. This was in reply to St. Peter’s score of 270 for 9 made in their stipulated 60 overs of batting. After the tea break the match was of academic interest as an inevitable draw was on the card.
