Battle of the Bots: Register Now for the SLIIT ROBOFEST 2023 Robotics Competition
View(s):The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at SLIIT presents ROBOFEST, an annual robotics competition aimed at showcasing the design talents of students from all around the country. This year’s competition will be held on September 25th, 2023, at the SLIIT Malabe Campus, and registrations are now open for both school and university categories.
Since the inaugural ROBOFEST in 2010, the competition has been conducted annually in three categories: school, undergraduate, and open category. Due to COVID-19 constraints, ROBOFEST 2021 and 2022 were hosted as hybrid events. In line with adapting to the new normal, the organisers were able to introduce participants to a new realm of virtual robotic simulation while maintaining the spirit of ROBOFEST. Emboldened by this challenge, participation in ROBOFEST 2021 and 2022 exceeded the organisers’ expectations. Keeping up with the tradition, ROBOFEST 2023 will once again be held in an exciting and energetic atmosphere.
In the School Category, participants will design a mobile robot that can navigate through painted lines and reach the final goal. The competition will have two rounds, and a team must comprise a maximum of five members from the same school. The top three winners of the final round will be awarded prizes, with the winner receiving prizes worth LKR 75,000, the first runner-up receiving prizes worth LKR 50,000, and the second runner-up receiving prizes worth LKR 30,000. Additionally, consolation prizes will be awarded to other deserving teams.
In the University Category, teams of undergraduates from a university or any university-level degree-awarding institute will be tasked with building a miniature robot capable of solving a maze within a minimum time. The competition will follow the concept of Micromouse robotic challenges, and a team must comprise a maximum of five members from the same university or institute. The top three winners of the final round will be awarded prizes, with the winner receiving prizes worth LKR 100,000, the first runner-up receiving prizes worth LKR 75,000, and the second runner-up receiving prizes worth LKR 50,000. Additionally, two consolation prizes worth LKR 12,500 each will be awarded to deserving teams. The competition is a great opportunity for students to showcase their theoretical and practical knowledge of robotics in an exciting and energetic atmosphere.
Furthermore, at SLIIT, we believe that workshops and outreach programmes preceding ROBOFEST 2023 are an important aspect of the competition, as they allow participants to acquire valuable skills and knowledge. The SLIIT team will conduct outreach programmes for school and university students, which will enable students to improve their skills and exhibit their talents. Through these workshops and programmes, school students will gain practical experience and knowledge that will be highly beneficial for the competition. Details of the programme will be posted on the competition’s Facebook page shortly.The registration for the school category of the competition is now open and will close on June 15, 2023. The phase one registration for the university/Open category will be open from May 22 to June 22, 2023, and the phase two registration will be open from July 10 to July 30, 2023.
