State University courses to be available for sports persons
View(s):The University Grants Commission has called for applications from candidates who have excelled in sports to follow courses in sports science and physical education at State universities.
Those who have won medals or participated in the Olympic Games, or have won gold, silver or bronze medals in Commonwealth Games, Asian Games or SAARC Games are eligible to apply.
Sportsmen and women who are members of a national team representing the country at the above games, or in a recognised World Cup in sports such as cricket, football or rugby, volleyball, netball or any other sport as decided by the UGC will also qualify for courses.
Those selected will be able to follow a course of study in sports science and management conducted by the Sabaragamuwa University, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the University of Kelaniya, or follow a course of study in physical education conducted by Sabaragamuwa University and the University of Jaffna.
Candidates selected for admission under this special category should complete a suitable foundation course conducted by the Open University before commencing the academic programme. Those who have excelled in sports are encouraged to apply on or before May 23.
