SLIIT Convocation 2023 Commemorates Graduates’ Hard Work and Dedication

The March Convocation of SLIIT, the country’s most prestigious and well-recognised non-state higher educational institute, was held from the 20th to the 23rd of March 2023 at the SLIIT Auditorium. It is the 29th Annual convocation ceremony of the Institute. The convocation was a grand affair, spanning over four days and consisting of 11 sessions. The Chief Guests who were present at each session included Mr. Paul Stephens, the High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives; Prof. Seth Kunin, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of International at Curtin University in Australia; and Ms. Aushyani Samarasinghe, the Director of Education for International Education at the Australian Trade and Investment Commission.

The convocation also saw the participation of Mr. Shevan Goonathilaka, the CEO of MillenniumIT ESP, and Mr. Sanjeewa Wickramanayaka, the Chairman of Ewis Group of Companies and Toppan Forms (Colombo) Ltd. Other notable guests included Prof. Ananda Jayawardena, the Senior Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa and the Chairman of Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC, Mr. Geoffrey Alagarathnam, the President’s Counsel and Past President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, and Dr. Narendra Desilva, Head of Engineering of Lanka Electricity Company Private Limited. The convocation also had the pleasure of hosting representatives from the University of Bedfordshire, such as Dr. Gordon Mellor, the Associate Dean of Academic Partnerships. The event was graced by other distinguished chief guests such as Mr. Ian Wroot, the Interim Director of Liverpool School of Art & Design and Subject Head for Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University, UK, Mr. Aravinda Perera, the Managing Director of Royal Ceramics Lanka PLC, Mr. Rohan Fernando, the Group Chairman/Director of Sri Lanka Telecom Group, and Mr. Ravi Abesuriya, the Director/CEO of Senfin Securities Limited.

Over 1900 students were conferred degrees in various disciplines including both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The degrees included Computing, Business, Engineering and Humanities and Sciences. The ceremony also saw students receiving their Master’s Degrees in various specialisations. The ceremony witnessed a plethora of students delivering exemplary performances across various fields of study. These exceptional achievements were duly recognised and rewarded with the coveted best performance awards, both in the gold and merit categories, setting a high benchmark for future graduates to strive towards. This year the best performance awards were sponsored by Dialog Axiata PLC, Virtusa Pvt. Ltd, IFS R&D International (Pvt) Ltd, MAGA Engineering (Pvt) Ltd, VitalHub (Pvt) Ltd, EW Information Systems Ltd, Zillione, CodeGen International (Pvt) Ltd, Walkers CML, Sampath Information Technology Solutions, LSEG Technology, and Bank of Ceylon.

Established in 1999, the SLIIT has the largest student population among non-state sector universities in Sri Lanka. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in a variety of disciplines, such as computing, business, engineering, education, science, quantity surveying, design and architecture, biotechnology, nursing, law, financial mathematics, psychology, hospitality and culinary and event management. The growing number of research papers published in high-ranking journals, affiliations with international universities, and the success of the quality graduates produced to attest to SLIIT’s efforts to become a regionally recognised knowledge university.
