The Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) is expected to meet President Ranil Wickremesinghe next week before beginning marking of GCE (A/L) answer scripts.

The meeting was due to be held on Friday, but due to the non-availability of sufficient time, the event was postponed to next week.

FUTA said they were looking forward to ending their boycott and completing the marking of A/L exam answer scripts.

Chairman, FUTA, Prof Shyam Banneheka said that a Cabinet paper submitted by the Education Ministry helped to resolve the outstanding issues to a large extent, and therefore they decided to end the boycott.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that they were confident about going ahead with the marking of A/L/ papers by next week.

He said that there were a couple of other issues to be resolved and that he was confident that these could be resolved.

Minister Premjayantha said that therefore they could go ahead with the already prepared examination schedule.

Menwhile the Treasury released Rs 700 million for the payment of arrears for teachers involved in previous marking of examination papers.

Minister Premajayantha said that the arrears have been pending for several years.

He said that the money will be released to the Examinations Commissioner by next week, which would enable the Department to start making the payments.

He added that instructions have also gone out to make arrangements for the GCE (O/L) paper marking, which is due to commence soon after the examination is completed. The exam is due to start at the end of next month. Arrangements will be made to make an advance payment for the teachers who register to correct papers.

Minister Premajayantha said that instructions have gone out to make a payment of Rs 2,900 – including a transport allowance – for paper marking per day. Accordingly, the Examinations Department can commence paper marking without any arrears pending.
