The Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project is nearing completion and there is a possibility the project will be opened in June, Irrigation State Minister Roshan Ranasinghe said.

State Minister Ranasinghe accompanied by project officials visited the project sites recently.

According to officials, 97 per cent of the project has now been completed and in the next few months they will be able to complete the rest. The project is set to add around 120Mw of power to the National Grid after being launched, the state minister said.

The project located in the Welimada area of the Badulla district, includes the construction of two dams across Uma Oya and a tributary at Welimada, a trans-basin diversion tunnel, and an underground hydropower plant.

The project also aims to irrigate around 5000 hectares of land in the Hambantota and Monaragala districts and other downstream areas.

The total estimated cost of the project is US$ 529 million.

The power plant will be connected via a 22.7km length 132kV Transmission line to the Badulla Grid Substation.
