The Uttara Lanka Sabhagaya (Supreme Lanka Coalition) led by Wimal Weerawansa released a 12-point plan at its first convention at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday, describing it as the way forward for the country.

The alliance said the 12-point plan is aimed at strengthening the rupee and cracking down on the foreign exchange black market; protecting the livelihoods of the low-income groups; ensuring continued supply of essential food items and maintaining price stability; preventing the breakdown of the local food production and guaranteeing the supply of foreign exchange for the imports of essential food items.

The plan also calls for a change of the economic model.

Some of its other proposals include ensuring economic growth while protecting small-scale producers, the unemployed and the under employed; ensuring food and energy security, implementing a proper tax structure, discussing with friendly countries about debt restructuring instead of depending on the International Monetary Fund, and preventing the sale of national assets on the pretext of finding solutions to the economic crisis.
