An international mobile exhibition themed ‘Critical Zone – In search of common ground’ where artists give expression to environmental issues, is on at Colombo’s J.D.A. Perera Gallery until November 27.

Earth’s “Critical Zone” is the near-surface environment in which complex interactions involving rock, soil, water, air, and living organisms regulate the natural habitat and determine the availability of life-sustaining resources. The exhibition, a novel concept for Sri Lanka, contains different forms of art that illustrate various aspects of the interlinks of the critical zones.

The Critical Zone was first exhibited at the Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany (2020–2022) and co-produced by the ZKM | Karlsruhe and the GoetheInstitut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai. The exhibition on in Colombo includes works by students from the University
of Visual and Performing
Arts (UVPA).

As the world’s focus was on Egypt’s COP27 climate summit, climate change is a central point of this exhibition said a spokesperson for the Goethe-Institut Colombo. For example, the exhibit ‘Atmospheric Forest’ visualises the complex relations between a forest, climate change, and the atmosphere. It is the result of a three-year artistic research project on Pfynwald, an ancient Alpine coniferous forest suffering from drought, which Swiss
scientists have turned into a living observatory.
