No nutrition packs for pregnant women: Councillor blames UC chairman

More than 2000 pregnant mothers in the Maharagama Urban Council area have not received nutrition packs for two and half years, the council was told this week.

The Rs 5000 worth nutrition pack had not been given as the UC chairman Tiraj Lakruwan Piyarathne had not forwarded a request letter to the Western Province Governor, SLPP council member Chandrika de Zoysa said.

Speaking at the budget debate of the council on Thursday, she said the chairman had failed to even include allocations for the nutrition packs in the 2023 budget document.

She also alleged that the council chairman did not allow the setting up of a women’s committee, adding that these committees look into abuse of children and public welfare and matters related to women.

Responding to the allegations the Chairman said he had more pressing matters to attend to than provide nutrition packs for women or creating women councils.

He said that 700 roads in the council area have to be repaired under the budget for 2023, along with repairing 10 community centres and 450 drains in the council area.

The budget was passed with 24 voting in favour and 14 against.
