Roaming street pooches are causing concern as more people are being bitten by them. School children and pedestrians have become victims as packs of dogs by the roadsides in the Aluthgama- Maggona area chase people and bite them.

The people who fell victim to dog bites complained that many hospitals do not have the anti-Rabies vaccines despite 500 dog bites reported within a day.

It is believed that around 15,000 stray dogs are in the country and most of them are not vaccinated against rabies. Therefore, there is a looming threat of a Rabies spread.

Though earlier spaying and neutering of stray dogs as well as vaccination plans were carried out, lately such programmes are not carried out increasing the population of unvaccinated street dogs.
