Grenade in church: Police yet to arrest man seen on cctv footage
Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) sleuths are yet to locate the man, who visited the All Saints’ Church in Borella on Tuesday, the day a live hand grenade was discovered inside the church premises.
According to the CCD, two police teams had been deployed to arrest the man. In cctv footage shown at a media conference addressed by Colombo’s Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith on Thursday, the man with a limp was seen entering the church carrying a silisili bag and then going to the place where the grenade was found. He was seen bending and doing something before he made a quick exit upon seeing a church worker coming that way.
“So far we have arrested four people. The cctv footage the church released to the media was also checked to identify the man,” a CCD officer said. The CCD made the arrests based on cctv footage from 3pm on Tuesday. However the man who came to the church was seen in cctv footage of the morning.
Among the four people arrested was a church worker. He was produced before Colombo’s Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya on Thursday and remanded.
According to initial investigations, the grenade had been kept behind a statue. Matchsticks and joss sticks had been cellotaped to the grenade with the intention of triggering a blast.
The other three suspects are being detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for questioning.
