Child abuse in plain sight

The sight of people begging by the roads with children is a heart-rending one for all. Many of these children are just infants who cannot yet walk. They are held by an adult who usually waits by traffic lights, hoping for some money from passing motorists.

These children undergo great hardships. They are helpless and have no choice but to stay with the adult for hours at a time while he or she begs on the road.

Their health is constantly under threat. They are exposed to the hot sun, rain, vehicle fumes and dust. The fact that begging is being done on the road means there is always the risk of an accident. Authorities have repeatedly said they will take action against those who beg at traffic lights, and use children for begging. However, the practice of adults using children to beg continues.

There have even been reports in the past that some desperate parents actually give their children to other adults to beg on the roads for a fee.
