The New Year brought new hope as the foundation stone was laid for a brand new three-storey building for the National ECMO Centre at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital on January 10.

The highlight of the ceremony was the presence of patients, big and small, who have undergone extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to save their lives.

The new building to provide life support through the ECMO service will comprise a four-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as well as a training and simulation centre. Funded by the Health Ministry, the further development of this service has got the full support of ministry Secretary Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe.

Many neonates, children and adults including a few suffering from COVID-19 have benefited from ECMO.

The live-wires behind the ECMO service, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Tolusha Harischandra, Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Kapilani Withanaarachchi and the ECMO team have been fully supported by the hospital’s administrators.

The building is to be completed in six months.
