Gazette a small win for teachers’ struggle: Stalin

The Education Ministry declared the Sri Lanka Principals’ Service, Teacher Advisors’ Service and Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service as three separate Closed Services, with the concurrence of the Public Service Commission, through an Extraordinary Gazette notification issued on Friday.

The authority and provisions on the appointments, promotions, disciplinary proceedings, transfers and other establishment matters of each service will remain in effect same as at present, according to the gazette issued by Prof Kapila Perera, Secretary to the Ministry.

The provisions which included salaries, posts, categories of services and grades will be in effect from August 30, last year.

Welcoming the move as a ‘small win’ for their months-long continuous trade union struggle last year, the Ceylon Teachers Union General Secretary, Joseph Stalin, said it was one of their key demands during discussions with the government and the declaration will resolve many administrative and pending salary anomalies.

Currently over 30,000 teaching vacancies are yet to be filled for subjects such as Mathematics, Science, English and IT but fewer people are willing to join the service because of poor pay, Mr. Stalin stressed.

“Declaring Teaching Service as a separate one and resolving existing salary anomalies will be a good start to fill those vacancies,” Mr Stalin said.
