The Halal Accreditation Council (HAC) confirmed there is no pig fat in milk powder, after the organisation obtained two test reports from an internationally endorsed laboratory.

HAC Director & CEO, Ali Fatharally said in a press release issued on Thursday(21) that they wished to clarify their position following the confusion in the country over the claim that pig fat contaminated milk powder was being imported from New Zealand.

He further added that, the confusion was the result of a claim made by the Minister of Industry & Commerce Buddikka Pathirana.

He further verified the absence of pig fat in milk powder by obtaining test reports from the internationally recognised laboratory of Chulalongkorn University in Thailand.

The HAC is concerned that the allegations made by people in authority, had an adverse impact on Halal Certification that facilitates over 65% of Sri Lanka’s Food and Beverages. The accounting impact is over US$ 1 billion.

They also request that all parties who make allegations regarding pig fat in milk powder, to share credible evidence or information available to prove that pig fact or porcine contamination is present in milk powder, to carry out further investigations.
