Teams of Japanese experts are conducting research on coastal erosion taking place in Sri Lanka, a senior official from the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management (DCCRM) said.

He explained that engineers and professors attached to the Yokohama National University of Japan have initiated a series of experiments.

Chief Engineer of the Coastal Development Unit, DCCRM, R A S Ranawaka said the western coast of Sri Lanka had been heavily eroded since the 1980s, and has been subjected to erosion as there was a lack of sand flow from rivers and other sources.

“There has been a 30km stretch of sea shore extending from Negombo. Apart from that, the Marawila coast in the Puttalam District, too, has eroded. The northern shores, too, are under the effects of erosion,” he said.

Professors and coast engineers attached to Yokohama University, as well as London University, are providing recommendations as they will be carrying on three-year experiments and observations.
