The annual religious and cultural pageant, the Navam Maha Perahera, was held  at the Gangarama Temple  last week. The event started on February 19 (Tuesday) and spanned two days, with the colourful procession winding its way along the streets of Colombo 2.

Thousands of schoolchildren from several schools in Colombo participated in the procession waving flags. The sprawling parade had whip crackers, fire dancers, flutists, drummers, torch bearers, fire eaters, acrobats, stilt walkers and dancers.

A grand procession of tuskers moved majestically in the parade enthralling onlookers. The main tusker, adorned in an elaborate and colourful caparison, carried the sacred relic casket. Many tourists, foreign dignitaries and local politicians were seen at the event.
