Car registrations slow down

View(s):

Car registrations have been on the decline in the past three months, Motor Traffic Commissioner General Jagath Chandrasiri said.

Last month, 4,294 cars were registered compared to 6,016 registrations in January last year.

From January 2018 to October 2018, car registrations ranged between 6,000 and 8,000 a month and started showing a decline from November last year.  In November last year only 5,018 cars were registered followed by 3,960 in December.

According to the Commissioner General, the decline was connected with the Government’s new vehicle import regulations, including the suspension of the duty free permits to senior public servants. Another reason was the depreciation of the rupee against the US dollar.
