The Transport Ministry is again pushing for the enforcement of the maximum fine of Rs. 25,000 for major traffic offences, officials said.

Driving without a valid licence, drunk driving or driving after using drugs, driving without a valid insurance cover, speeding, employing a driver without a licence and trying to drive past railway barriers have been identified as major offences. Recently, fines for these offences were increased.

The proposal to increase the fines up to Rs. 25,000 received Cabinet approval recently. An earlier proposal to increase the fines upto Rs. 25,000 was dropped after road users, including threewheeler drivers’ associations and bus operators, protested.
