Double torture at Wanathamulla

View(s):

Residents of the Wanathamulla flats are in a dilemma, amid the extreme heat, they have been left without water for over a week. The complex, divided into 18 blocks, contains 352 different units.

This also meant the people had absolutely no toilet facilities for the past week.

Residents claim authorities had turned a blind eye to their plight until media exposure jolted them into action. The Water Board has now installed several water tanks within the complex.

The main water tank, which supplies water to smaller tanks in the complex, has been blocked. A search revealed a host of discarded items, broken pipelines, plastic tea cups, plastic bottles and even fertilizer bags which may have been responsible for the blockage.

Residents suspect, some of the items may have been discarded by workmen who were working on the tank earlier.

Whatever the cause, residents have been severely inconvenienced for over a week.

Flatters living on the upper floors face an infinitely worse problem, as the only way they can transport water to their homes is by bringing the precious liquid from the temporary tanks to the relevant block and then drawing it up using ropes. - Pix by Priyantha Wickramarachchi.
