Hundreds of schoolboy Ruggerites are to be duly recognised for their outstanding performances during the concluded school Rugby season, at the annual awards ceremony of the Singer Schools Rugby League Championship on Jan. 25, at the Bishops’ College Auditorium, along with the inaugural Singer-the Sunday Times Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year 2017, where 5 top awards will be presented.

The spotlight, undoubtedly, will be on the top 3 awards, with the Singer-Sunday Times Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year 2017 taking pride of place. The other two awards will be the Best Try Scorer of the Year and Best Place Kicker of the Year.

In addition, Aabid Cader and his team, S. Thomas’ College, will be awarded the Singer-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year 2017 and the Most Popular Rugby Team of the Year 2017. Both awards were finalised after a voting campaign via coupons published for 15 weeks in 2017. The 3 remaining awards will be based on the performances of the last season, selected by a panel of experts .

Royal College will officially receive their much awaited Singer League Championship trophy along with certificates. League Runners-up Isipathana College will be presented with their silverware. Plate champions St. Anthony’s College Katugastota and Runners-up Dharmaraja College will be duly awarded.

Ananda College emerged Bowl champions while Maliyadeva College Kurunegala were runners-up at the Singer League Division I tournament. The Shield Championship went to St. Aloysius College Galle while Nalanda College Colombo were runners-up.

Along with the title winners and runners-up of the 4 categories, 29 other teams will receive certificates of participation. They are Trinity, Wesley, St. Joseph’s, St. Peter’s, S. Thomas’, Zahira, Kingswood, DS Senanayake, Science, Lumbini, Vidyartha, Prince of Wales, St. Benedict’s, Thurstan, St. Sylvester’s, Mahanama, Piliyandala Central, Richmond, CWW Kannangara, Lalith Athulathmudali, St. Thomas’ Matara, Sri Sumangala Kandy and Eheliyagoda Central.

The Division II Cup championship was won by St. Anne’s College Kurunegala while Carey College were runners-up. The Plate championship was won by Sri Rahula College Katugastota while Vidyaloka College Galle emerged runners-up.

Among the schools to be recognised with participation certificates are Moratu Vidyalaya, Royal Panadura, Mahinda Galle, Thalduwa Buddhist School, Nugawela Central, Asoka Vidyalaya, Devapathiraja Rathgama, Presidents Maharagama, Bandaranaike Gampaha and Rahula Matara.

The title winners of Division III are yet to be finalised and will be picked from Ruwanwella Central, St. Thomas’ Prep, Dehiowita NS, Mahanama Panadura, Imbulana MV, Hindu College, Ihala Thalduwa MV, Sir John Kotalawala MV Kurunegala, Panduwasnuwara MV, Kegalu Vidyalaya, D.B. Welagedara MV Kurunegala and Kuliyapitiya Central.
