Kandy show their mettle over Singapore

Kandy SC, who has been dominating rugby in Sri Lanka, showed their mettle when up against foreign teams by beating Singapore convincingly by 44 points to 14 at Nittawela.

The Singapore side was a mixture of some Singaporeans and many expatriates. However, save for the last few minutes when Kandy benched some of their stars, they didn’t quite measure up to the local side who won almost as they liked.

Fazil Marija opened Kandy’s account with a try and followed it up later with another. Richard Dharmapala scored what was probably the try of the day, scorching his way through fifty yards and brushing off three or four tackles.

Wilwara, who had a good game, finished off another try in style. Dhanushka Ranjan and Damien Ratwatte also went over.

Ratwatte and Jamaldeen accounted for the conversions.

Australian Johnson Darber and Peter Williams touched down for the visitors. Darber was successful with his two kicks at goal.

Referee – Priyantha Gunaratne.
