3,500 qualify for Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletics

Over 3500 school athletes have entered for 47th Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletics Championships to be held on November 8, 9 and 10 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex, Diyagama.

The three day event is being conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Association. The meet was scheduled to be held on October 28, 29 and 30 at the Jayatilleke Stadium in Nawalapitiya but due to the prevailing weather conditions the was meet was transferred to Diyagama.

There are four age groups – boys and girls. They are under 12, under 13, under 14 and under 15 for the event.

Only those athletes who have qualified from province level are permitted to take part in the Junior Tarbat. Three province meets were held to select the athletes. The first province meet was held in Polonnaruwa. North, East, North Western and North Central athletes participated. The second province meet took place in Hanwella. Athletes from the Western Province and Southern Province participated at this meet. The other was held in Nawalapitiya.

For the Nawalapitiya meet, Central, Uva and Sabaragamuwa athletes took part.
