An athletic pool of 40 members, which has been formed aiming the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games 2018, has been submitted for Sports Ministry approval. This has been done by the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka.

The Commonwealth Games will be held from April 4 to 15, 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia. The Asian Games will be held from August 18 to September 2, next year in Jakarta, Indonesia.

For the Commonwealth Games, Sri Lanka’s quota is eight men and six women competitors. The Athletics Association has made a request to the National Olympic Committee to increase it to 12 men and eight women. The Athletics Association of Sri Lanka is hoping to publish a qualifying standard for the Commonwealth Games.

The 40-member pool is currently under training. The final trial is expected to be in February 2, 2018 at the Colombo Sugathadasa Stadium or at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama.

The quota for the Asian Games has not been declared as yet. The first trial is expected to be held in May next year and the final trial in June 2018.
