The lasses from Bandarapola Maha Vidyalaya Matale made their school proud as they emerged Division ‘B’ (schools having less than 1000 students) Under-17 Netball champions at the 26th Milo All-Island Schools Netball Championship 2017 held in Badulla.

Bandarapola MV led by Malsha Weerasingha beat Sirimalwatta MV Gunnepana in Kandy 30-25 in the final to record their third consecutive title win at a national level competition. Bandarapola MV emerged Division ‘B’ U-16 champions for two years at the 24th and 25th Milo Schools Netball Championships held in 2015 and 2016. The school was also placed third in the U-15 competition held this year and the team was led by Pawani Jayarathna.

It is a great achievement for this school situated in the suburbs of Matale, which started playing netball seven years ago in 2010.

They have won titles at zonal and all island levels since 2013 thus displaying their skills in this sport in no uncertain terms.

Three players from this school also had the honour of winning the best players award on four occasions since 2015. Malsha Weerasingha won the best player’s award twice, in 2015 as a player of the U-15 team and then as the captain of the U-17 team in 2017, while Upeksha Chathurangani and Anuradhi Hansima Ratnayake were named as the best players in the U-16 and U-19 age categories respectively in 2016.

This school deserves all credit for being the first and only school from the Matale district to win a major title for three consecutive years (2015 – 2017) in the Milo trophy all island schools netball championships.

The success of the game at this school in a short period of time could be attributed to the untiring efforts taken by the coach and P.T.I – Krishni Siriwardane who guided and trained the players on the correct track to achieve these victories. She did her job with sheer dedication and commitment to change the team to a fighting outfit.
