Over 140 competitors in battle on September 17

The sixth edition of the Uda Walawe Supercross organised by the Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports committee of the Sri Lanka Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (SLEME) and supported by the Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club (SLMCC) will speed off at Uda Walawe Supercross in Sevanagala, Uda Walawe on September 17.

This was revealed at a press briefing held at SLEME auditorium. The inaugural meet was held in 2011 and has since then gone from strength to strength and this year too, the organisers along with the sponsors who have come forward will be looking forward to end the event with success as in the previous years.

The track situated at the 17th mile post on the Uda Walawe-Thanamalwila main road, just outside the Army camp is close to the Uda Walawe National which is patronised by locals and international tourist with awe.

The SLMCC has a proud history of over six decades in organising motor racing events in the past such as the Reliability Trials, Circuit meets in Kurunegala, Ratmalana and Matugama, Road races in Kurunegala and Nuwara Eliya to name a few.

Entries have not been closed yet and the organisers are expecting over 140 competitors including from overseas to be in action in the 11 car motor car and 13 motor cycle events that is scheduled to be held on that day.

Top driver of the meet last year Pasindu Peiris and rider Gayan Sandaruwan will be seeking to retain the title but they will face stiff opposition from in form Ashan Silva in the motor car in the SL GT Supercar event and Jacques Gunawardena and Ishan Dasanayake in the motorcycle category.

The other notable contestants in the motor car and motorcycle categories to take note of will be young Kushan Peiris who won two events last year and from recently has been in top form in the motor car events while Imal Manchanayake and Evon Gurusinghe will be the riders to watch out in the motorcycle events.

Twenty four events are scheduled to be held for the day with 11 in the motor car and 13 in motor cycle categories.

Causway Paints are main sponsors while CEAT, Cold Stores, Stafford Motors and a host of others have come in as co-sponsors to make this event a success.

Motor Cars: 1. Group SL-E – Cars up to 1000cc and one make Nissan March. 2. Group SL-N – Ford Laser/Mazda 1300cc. 3. Ford Laser/Mazda 1500cc. 4. Group SL-A – Mini7 up to 1000cc. 5. Modified up to 1050cc. 6. Cars upto 1600cc. 7. Subaru upto 2200cc Non Turbo. 8. Group SL-S – Cars Special upto 1500cc. 9. Group SL-GT – Cars up to 3500cc. 10. Group T&J – Trucks and Jeeps Diesel Turbo up to 5500cc. 11. Trucks and Jeeps Open.

Motorcycles: 1. Group M Trail – Standard/Modified up to 125cc (2T). 2. Standard/Modified upto 125cc (2T) & 250cc (4T0. 3. Standard/Modified Open (4T) Special Club Event. 4. Group J – MX – Racing Motorcycles – Racing Motorcycle 50cc over 5 years and under 10 years. 5. Racing Motorcycles Over 65cc up to 85cc (2T) and over 100cc up to 150cc under 13 years. 6. Racing Motorcycles Over 65cc up to 85cc (2T) and over 100cc upto 150cc under 16 years. 7. Group MX Racing Motorcycles – Racing Motorcycles Over 100cc up to 125cc (2T). 8. Group MX Racing Motorcycles – Racing Motorcycles Over 100cc up to 125cc (2T).and over 175cc up to 250cc (4T). 9. Racing Motorcycles Open (2T) & (4T) Special Club Event. 10. Racing Motorcycles over 100cc up to 125cc (2) – Forces Event_ Special Club Event. 11. Group MX Super Moto/Super Motard Motorcycles – Motorcycles over 100cc up to 125cc (2T) and over 175cc up to 250cc (4T). 12.
