Having had a great spell at the recently concluded Kotmale Chox Under-19 Inter-School Football Championships by emerging runners-up, St. Peter’s College is on the verge of proving a point – that they are the next best force or the team to beat in schools football. This was evident in the All-Island Under-17 Inter-School Football Championships organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association.

Under 17 Team

A total of 36 teams from the region took part in this competition and St. Peter’s emerged on top by defeating some of the top teams well renowned in schools football. One such major upset was against football strongholds Zahira College Colombo, where the Peterites recorded stunning 1-0 win in the semi-finals of group stage. Afam Akram scored the solitary goal through an awarded free kick, to give the Peterites a memorable yet historic win.

In the final match of the group, the Peterites met Arathusa College Wellawatta and beat comprehensively by 5 goals to nil. The score was 2-nil at halftime in favour of the Peterites. Dananjaya de Silva played brilliantly and scored a hat-trick of goals while Johan Wickremasinghe and Niresh Sundharraj scored a goal each.

St. Peter’s now moves on to the next stage where 24 teams, each topping their groups, from other regions across the country, will lock horns in the knockouts. The St. Peter’s Under-17 football team is coached by Isuru Perera and Mohamed Azwar.
