Stay at home fans will have to pinch themselves to believe this. Science College Mt. Lavinia pulled off a comprehensive 29-7 win over S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia in the Singer ‘A’ Division Under 20 League rugby game at the Science College grounds at Templar’s Road yesterday.

Science gained this win by three goals, one try and a penalty to the solitary goal scored by the Thomians.

This result is all the more important to the Science College lads. To all accounts they have learnt the game from their sea side rivals and to finally overcome them in the game that they learnt from itself speaks volumes of their grit and determination.

To add salt to the wounds of the Thomians, the Science College Under-16 XV side also won their game played earlier at 17-12 making it a double celebration for Science. The Thomians managed to win the junior games played earlier but and the two most important games however went under the Science College belts.

S. Thomas’ had their opportunities but the big made forwards bungled with them. On the other hand the tall and fleet-footed Science College lads were on to the ball in a flash, especially towards the latter stages and this in particular helped the Science lads to triumph. The game started with winger Ajith Roshan touching down far right and Ruvin Fernando added the extra points to put the Science lads ahead at 7-0. Undaunted the Thomians struck back with Shakila de Silva touching down and Hans Walpola added the extra points to make it 7-all. That was all the scoring done by the Thomians in this game. Just before the break Science scored an unconverted try through Aias Manthur to lead 12-7.

The Science XV battled courageously and tries came through No. 8 Isuru Viraj, which was converted by Prince Chamara, who was conspicuous with his breakthrough runs and Lasindu Karunatilleke.

Referee Irshad Cader had a tight control over the First XV game.
