Ten finalists will showcase their creations through 10 models at the event closely watched by the panel of seven judges. Some designers should be better named designer models, as they will model their creations themselves just as Chula really did in the beginning of her career.

Chula’s designs at the show will be modelled by this year’s Derana Miss Sri Lanka. This year’s show will have four segments- Office wear, Sportswear, Evening wear and Saree designs. The official hair dresser for the event is Sleek Salon. As in many of her shows, choreography is done by Chula herself.

Chula Nanayakkara Ariyaratne started designing as a teenager at Velona Group Threadworks (Pvt) Ltd. and has been on the fashion landscape for almost 45 years since. She received the award for best film costume design for the film Ganga Addara in 1980 and went onto design costumes for many films such as Kaliyugaya, Yuganthaya, etc. She has done fashion shows in cities like London, Sydney, Kuala Lumpur, and Chennai.

Tickets for the Fashion Designer of the Year 2012 contest are available today at the Bishop’s College auditorium.
