Lankans fencers emerge runners up

2nd South Asian Fencing Championships

Sri Lanka emerged runners-up at the 2nd South Asian Fencing Championships which was held in Hyderabad, India from April 17 to 19. India won the overall championship while winning much of the honours but Sri Lankan fencers displayed excellent skill. Sri Lanka was represented by nine fencers, six males and three females, who excelled in three categories, the foil, epee and sabre.

The Sri Lanka men’s team was represented by Pradeep Dunukiyanga, Suresh Sudarshana, Chamara Nuwan, Priyantha Pathirana, Manjula Fernando, Sadesh Chandana while Niranjala Weeraratne, Piyumi Krishanthi and Sandeepa Sandamali represented the women’s team. Sri Lanka won an overall of two main awards 10 silver and four bronze medals from the competition.

Manjula Fernando, Sadesh Chandana, Suresh Sudarshana and Priyantha Pathirana competed in the men’s sabre event to claim four silver medals. Sri Lanka’s women’s trio won three silver medals from the foil event and went on to claim three more silvers from the epee event. They also won three bronze medals from the sabre event. Piyumi Krishanthi competing in individual women’s epee event won the bronze medal. Both teams were awarded the overall runners-up awards.

The Sri Lanka teams were coached by Shanmugam Ganesan with the assistance of Asiri Wijesinghe. Kusani Silva and Sulochani Senarath were the team officials on tour. Five countries, namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka took part in the 2nd South Asian Fencing Championships which was held at the Kotla Bhaskar Reddy Stadium in Yousufguda, Hyderabad. The event was organised the Fencing Association of Andra Pradesh under the auspices of South Asian Fencing Federation and the Fencing Association of India. - NA
